Calibrating composites to thickness by sanding
This Technic Precision-3, recently delivered to a high-performance materials manufacturer, was designed for high-precision calibration of fiber-reinforced panels for insulation applications. This involves precision calibrating on panels measuring 1300 x 3000 mm (51"x118") with a maximum thickness tolerance range of +/- 0.02mm (0.000787"). Various measures have been taken to ensure that the wide belt sander maintains these tolerance values even after many years or decades of highly intensive use. The machine has a rated power of 116 kW for sanding the tough composite material. Massive pressure beams securely fix the material on the special feed belt. To avoid having to lift the heavy workpieces out of the machine during multiple passes, the sander has a feed reversal function.
